Nyonya refers to the descendants of Chinese and Malays who have intermarried and live more in places like Malacca and Penang in Malaysia and Singapore, where the Nyonya culture is very distinctive.
Inspired by the local Nyonya culture, Cheah Yeow Seng, a Malaysian ceramist, created this series of works with traditional porcelain making techniques and used elements such as figures, patterns and colors of Nyonya culture. These works show the unique charm of Nyonya culture in details, allowing people to feel the blend of tradition and modernity.
The works depict the unique cultural imprint of Chinese women in Malaysia. They stayed at home most of the time, learning domestic arts, cooking, taking care of children. However, their hard work and dedication is little known. The works acknowledge the toughness and hard work a Nyonya puts into building a family. We should respect Nyonyas and maintain this precious female power together.
Cheah Yeow Seng is a Malaysian ceramist who has been engaged in ceramic creation and education and has taught at the National Academy of Arts Culture and Heritage, Malaysia.His works are characterized by novel ideas and unique techniques. Over the years, he has participated in ceramic exhibitions, competitions and seminars all over the world. Through his own creations, he has preserved the culture of Nyonya that is about to disappear and passed it on to the next generation. This combination of tradition and modernity has not only made people more aware of Chinese culture in Malaysia, but also injected new vitality into the local cultural heritage.
