During college, Liu Yuanchang was mentored by ceramist Mr. Cai Jintai, who fostered his deep interest in traditional porcelain sculpture. He believes that many of the intricate techniques in Jingdezhen's traditional porcelain sculpture should be inherited and advanced by integrating them with a systematic understanding of art theory from academic studies. He sees this integration as an excellent opportunity to delve into traditional heritage. His hard work and dedication, alongside academic achievements, earned him multiple awards at the college.
Liu Yuanchang specializes in porcelain sculpture and excels in public sculpture and clay modeling. His works focus on deriving themes from real life, combining forms of shaping, carving, pinching, and hollowing. His works can be categorized into two types: fine sculpture and expressive sculpture. He is highly skilled with a keen artistic perception. His works feature meticulous composition, blending sentiment with logic, clean lines, and diverse forms. He adeptly incorporates traditional techniques with modern aesthetics, predominantly creating figurative works and mythological and historical representations, as well as depicting animals such as tigers, leopards, bears, and birds.
Liu Yuanchang is one of the sculptors from a dreamlike world. As a scholarly porcelain sculptor and pioneer in the porcelain sculpture field, he created internationally renowned national gift sculptures like Feitian (Flying to the Sky), the delightful Haha Arhat, Xiao Kou Chang Kai (Grinning All the Time), and Xi Yang Yang (Beaming with Joy). His significant large-scale group sculpture Water Margin 108 Heroes and his array of animal works like the ferocious or benevolent “Dragons,” “Cows,” and “Leopards” have all made contributions to Chinese porcelain sculpture history. His work spans historical and cultural figures from ancient to modern times, weaving together humanity and nature to form a porcelain art world that is both stylistically unique and vibrantly individualistic.
