A piece of Jun porcelain, crafted by two generations of artisans, evokes dreams of a grand millennium.

A handful of clay, a blazing kiln, creates a symphony of myriad colors.

Jun kiln exudes a substantial sense of quality held by the hand, unlike the kind of light and ordinary porcelain cups. It appears both classically romantic and sophisticated at first glance, and a versatile prop for photography. The colors span begonia-red, rose-purple, moon-white jade, and rainy-day green. On a single vessel, a kaleidoscope of hues intermingles, creating a captivating display. To witness red covering the mountains, purple dyeing the forest layers, high mountain clouds and mist, and a sky full of stars, you need not traverse mountains and seas but to look at a single piece of Jun kiln porcelain revealling a world of splendid purples and reds. This enchanting art of kiln-transformed colors has transcended the monochromatic green palette of past celadon, elevating Chinese ceramic art to a higher level.

Writing-Brush Washer with Drum-Nail Design and Glutton Pattern belongs to the traditional Jun kiln style. It takes the form of a traditional writing-brush washer and features glutton patterns and drum-nail decorations, with smooth lines and color variations. The combination of red and white resembles blooming red plum blossoms, exuding elegance and nobility. The stereoscopic and dynamic writing-brush washer reveals a mysterious power. Overall, it’s a precious item that blends culture, art, and practicality.

The author of this work is also an old acquaintance. He is Liu Hongsheng, who we previously introduced as the accomplished disciple of the grand master, Ren Xinghang. Liu Hongsheng is a Chinese ceramist, a master of arts and crafts from Henan Province, and a senior arts and crafts artist. Over the years, he has participated in international ceramic exhibitions and workshops held in Turkey, China, Japan, Bangladesh, and other places. His works have received numerous gold awards. As a representative inheritor of the national intangible cultural heritage project for Jun porcelain firing techniques, Liu Hongsheng combines modern aesthetic elements with traditional Jun porcelain craftsmanship. He adheres to the principle of ‘simplicity over complexity, integrity over fragmentation.’ Building upon traditional forms, he integrates various ceramic art languages, challenges technical difficulties, and blends decorative techniques such as carving, molding, and sculpting, resulting in artworks that exude a powerful and robust artistic beauty.
